Cucalorus Expectations

What I hope to get out of Cucalorus  honestly is just the satisfaction of going. I’ve never attended a film festival before, so this is a first. I will say I am super excited for one of the blocks (Paw Paw) for John R. Dilworth (the creator of Courage the Cowardly Dog, one of my all time favorite cartoons) has a short animated film in said block. In addition, it will be interesting to see the types of films that go into film festivals, as well as how these festivals function.

My plan of action is as follows:
-Friday November 9th – 7:15pm – Jackfruit Shorts
-Friday November 9th – 10:00pm – Lords of Chaos
-Sunday November 11th – 10:15am – Paw Paw Shorts (I am so ready for Dilworth’s film)
-Sunday November 11th – 4:15pm – Fiddlehead Shorts

Three challenges for myself:

1.       Attempt to talk to the filmmakers.
a.       This could be an excellent networking opportunity.
2.       Network and don’t be too shy.
a.       In addition to filmmakers, the people around me. Approach others and strike up a conversation. We are film loving people, it shouldn’t be too awkward.
3.       Be completely attentive and take notes on films for future inspiration.
a.       There could be a film that sticks with me. By taking notes on certain stylistic elements such as the shots used or even mise-en-scene, I could utilize it later in my own films, much how filmmakers do. Not stealing ideas, but being inspired by them.

Maya Deren was pretty hardcore. I admire the fact that all of her films were silent and that she was very particular about the way her films were presented, which is how it should be. One works hard to create this form of art and it should be respected, and after said artist is gone, one should still honor the wishes made by the filmmaker and screen the film with the upmost respect.

I thought his art was pretty interesting. Honestly, I don't find VR as amazing as it was at first, having used a VR headset many times. Kudos to him for making a living out of it though! Like that's amazing! Especially being as young as he is. I really liked the Johnny Cash video! I admire Cash's work and it was super interesting to see Koblin tackle it with such an art form.

Bela Belazs - Afterthought

It’s really strange to think about sounds and how each one has a specific place, and to think about how much sounds can be manipulated into sounding like something else. In addition to that, how well trained an ear can be. We as humans can distinguish a sound a dog would make from one a cat would make. This article was really fascinating. It made me realize sound isn’t just what we think it is. The ability to hear and recognize sound is a literal gift. I never thought of silence as how Belazs describes it. The idea that silence doesn’t just mean no sound, that minuscule sounds could be categorized as silence. To be honest, being in silence scares me. I hate silence. There’s just something eerie about the ambiance of a room that creeps me out to no end.
